Ghana’s coach Otto Addo has voiced concerns regarding his team’s tendency to concede late goals, attributing this issue to lapses in concentration. During his second tenure, Addo’s Black Stars have frequently allowed goals in the dying moments of matches, with a majority occurring in the final 10 minutes.
As they prepare for Thursday’s vital 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Sudan, Addo expressed his frustration with this recurring pattern. The team’s qualifying campaign has started poorly, with a loss to Angola and a draw against Niger, both marred by late goals, leaving Ghana third in their group and in desperate need of a win.
Reflecting on the situation, Addo acknowledged, “I can only speak about the games where I was the head coach. So, it’s difficult for me to take eight games…But you’re right; it’s a thing of concentration.” He emphasized the need for players to hold themselves and each other accountable, especially during critical defensive moments.
While he can offer guidance from the sidelines, Addo stressed that the players must take personal responsibility for maintaining defensive discipline. “They have to be ready themselves to defend every corner, even if it’s in the last minute or last two minutes, to be responsible for each and every part of their position,” he stated.
The match against Sudan is set to kick off at 4 PM local time at the Accra Sports Stadium.
