Former Ghana international Habib Mohammed is advocating for a fairer representation of local players within the Black Stars squad. Recently, players from Ghana’s domestic leagues have struggled to secure places on the national team, with only Kotoko’s Frederick Asare and Samartex’s Isaac Afful making the squad for recent matches against Sudan.
In an interview with Kessben FM, as reported by Sportblog247.com, the former King Faisal defender urged the Ghana Football Association to ensure that at least 30% of Black Stars call-ups are allocated to home-based players. “Local players must be regular in the Black Stars. We should ensure we get local players in every Black Stars call-up,” he stated, questioning the commitment levels of foreign-based players.
According to Mohammed, local players bring heightened dedication and passion, which strengthens the national team. He added, “They give their all when given the chance because of where they are coming from. We should at least give 30% Black Stars slots to local players.”
The Black Stars are scheduled to face Angola and Niger in their final Group F matches next month (November).
Notably, Mohammed represented Ghana at the 2006 FIFA World Cup, making his debut while playing for Premier League club King Faisal. After the opening game against Italy, he was promoted to the starting lineup, replacing Addoquaye Pappoe at left-back.
