Nigeria’s spirited journey at the FIFA U-17 Women’s World Cup came to a challenging end in Santiago de los Caballeros, where the Flamingos fell 2-0 to a relentless USA team in the quarterfinals. Coach Bankole Olowookere’s side, having secured a perfect record in the group stages by defeating hosts Dominican Republic, New Zealand, and Ecuador, entered the knockout phase brimming with hope.
The Flamingos were one of only three teams to advance with a flawless nine points, alongside Spain and Korea DPR, raising aspirations of going further than previous campaigns. However, the USA proved to be a formidable obstacle, exploiting defensive lapses and displaying a hunger for their first title in the competition.
In the game’s early moments, Nigeria showed intent, with Chidi firing a long-range shot in the 9th minute, though it lacked the power to test American goalkeeper Evan O’Steen. Nigerian goalkeeper Christiana Uzoma was instrumental, making a remarkable save to deny Mary Long in the 28th minute. But a pivotal moment came just before halftime when Shakirat Moshood’s foul in the box resulted in a penalty, converted by Kennedy Fuller to give the USA a 1-0 lead.
Despite the setback, Uzoma kept Nigeria in the game, making crucial saves at the end of the first half to prevent further damage. Taiwo Afolabi created Nigeria’s best opportunity in the second half, maneuvering past a defender only to see her shot blocked by O’Steen in the 63rd minute.
The USA doubled their lead in the 74th minute with a well-placed finish from Kimmi Ascanio. Though the American side continued to press, a third goal from Micayla Johnson was disallowed for offside, allowing the Flamingos to keep fighting until the final whistle.
With the USA advancing to the semifinals for the first time since 2008, Nigeria’s journey concluded at the quarterfinals—a familiar exit point in four of their seven appearances. While the Flamingos’ campaign ended sooner than hoped, their performances in the group stage offered a glimpse of Nigeria’s potential on the world stage.
