Alex Iwobi has highlighted the restrictions he faces in the Nigeria national team, pointing out that his role differs significantly from his position at Fulham. With only two assists in his last 32 appearances for the Super Eagles, Iwobi believes he has not been given the freedom to express himself on the pitch.
His performance at the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations raised eyebrows, as he failed to register a goal contribution despite playing in all matches, except one, during the tournament. Iwobi played a deeper role, which limited his productivity and drew criticism after Nigeria’s defeat to Ivory Coast in the final.
At 28, the midfielder has amassed 81 caps for Nigeria but has only 16 goal contributions. However, he noted a recent change under the new manager, who has encouraged him to push forward more, leading to two assists in the last five matches.
In an interview with Sportblog247.com, Iwobi explained, “My role for the national team and club side are two different roles. When I play, I am told to keep the ball and not really go forward as much until recently with this new manager. He wants me to get forward as much as I can.”
He further elaborated, “Before, I was told to sit back to let the attackers do the attacking. At least, you control the midfield or try to control the midfield. Whereas for my club side, I have the license to go and express myself a bit more, get attacking, get into goal-scoring opportunities; that is the big difference.”
This season in the Premier League, Iwobi has created 14 chances from open play, ranking him fifth in the league. Despite these recent improvements, he must find consistency in his national team performances to maintain his spot.
