The Libya Football Federation (LFF) is gearing up to challenge a recent Confederation of African Football (CAF) ruling following an incident that left Nigeria’s Super Eagles stranded for over fourteen hours at a Libyan airport. The delay stemmed from the Libyan authorities’ decision to divert the Nigerian team’s flight away from its intended destination in Benghazi, forcing them to land 300 km away at Al-Abraq International Airport. Stranded without food or internet, the Nigerian players and staff raised concerns about their safety, ultimately deciding to forfeit the AFCON 2025 qualifier match.
Following the incident, CAF awarded a 3-0 victory and three points to Nigeria while also imposing a $50,000 fine on the Libyan FA. In response, the LFF announced its intention to appeal the decision, contending that the ruling does not fairly reflect the situation and pointing to similar difficulties faced during their own travel to Nigeria for the first leg of the qualifiers, where they lost 1-0.
The appeal is expected to be filed within three days, though the LFF has indicated it will manage the proceedings discreetly. Currently, the bottom of Group D, Libya, is seeking a change in CAF’s decision as they fight to keep their qualifying hopes alive.
