Fulham defender Calvin Bassey has opened up about the pivotal moment that led him to choose Nigeria over England and Italy for his international career. Born in Italy to Nigerian parents and raised in England, Bassey had multiple options for international representation. However, his heart was set on Nigeria after witnessing Lionel Messi’s unforgettable goal against the Super Eagles during the 2018 World Cup in Russia.
Messi’s iconic knee-left-right touch goal, which sealed Argentina’s 2-1 victory, fueled Bassey’s passion for Nigeria and his desire to play on the world stage for the Super Eagles. Inspired by that moment, he set his sights on representing the three-time African champions, eventually making his debut in 2022.
Since then, the 24-year-old has earned 28 caps and was an integral part of the Nigerian squad that reached the AFCON final earlier this year, winning silver. In recognition of his contributions, he was awarded the prestigious Member of the Order of the Niger by Nigerian President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.
