Osimhen focuses on Team Goals Over Individual Accolades at Galatasaray

Napoli loanee Victor Osimhen has made it clear that he is not pursuing personal glory at Galatasaray, emphasizing instead his commitment to the team’s objectives. The Nigerian striker joined the Turkish champions on a season-long loan after potential transfers to Chelsea, and Al-Ahli fell through on deadline day in one of Europe’s top five leagues.

Although he initially planned to remain at Napoli until the January transfer window, a call from Galatasaray coach Okan Buruk persuaded him to move to Turkey. Osimhen, who has a strong history of scoring achievements—including winning the Golden Boot at the 2015 FIFA U17 World Cup and the Paolo Rossi Award for the 2022-2023 season—has made an impressive start in Turkey, contributing six goals (2 goals and 4 assists) in his first four matches.

After a slow start where he failed to score in his initial three games for Galatasaray, Osimhen broke his goal drought with two goals in a thrilling 3-3 draw against Kasimpasa. Unfortunately, he sustained an injury that ruled him out of contention for the Super Eagles squad for the October international fixtures.

In the race for the Turkish Super Lig’s top scorer award, Osimhen is currently behind Besiktas’ Ciro Immobile, who leads with seven goals, while Fenerbahce’s Edin Dzeko and İstanbul Başakşehir duo Krzysztof Piatek and João Figueiredo each have five goals.

When asked about the top scorer race, Osimhen stated in an interview with Galatasaray’s YouTube channel, “These are really great goalscorers in the history of football, but those who know me understand that I prioritize the team over personal accolades. My ambition at Galatasaray was never about being the highest goalscorer but about enhancing the quality of the team.”

He expressed great respect for Mauro Icardi, acknowledging the Argentine’s contributions to football and Galatasaray, and noted their effective partnership on the pitch. “I don’t care about being the highest goalscorer in the league. If it happens, it happens. What matters is the collective success of this great club,” he added.

Osimhen is set to resume full training with his teammates on Thursday ahead of their Super Lig clash against Antalyaspor on October 19.
