Patrick Johnson, Secretary General of the Ghana Mixed Martial Arts Federation (GHAMMAF) and the Ghana Adaptive Boxing Council (GABC), views the introduction of Para Boxing in Ghana as a vital opportunity for athletes with disabilities to showcase their boxing talents. He emphasized that beyond being a form of leisure and fitness, adaptive boxing offers a platform for competition at special events both locally and internationally.
In an interview with Omashi TV, Mr. Johnson highlighted that Ghana ranks among Africa’s top boxing nations, following South Africa and Kenya. He also mentioned that some para boxers are set to represent Ghana at an upcoming event in Poland organized by Seven Star Promotion, with further opportunities in the USA for dedicated athletes.
He urged boxers and coaches to focus on training diligently to deliver strong performances and earn selections for international competitions. Johnson expressed his appreciation to Hubert Kozub, CEO of Seven Star Promotion, for organizing world-class para boxing events and visiting Ghana to provide encouragement and opportunities for the boxers.
Recently, the Ghana Adaptive Boxing Federation, in collaboration with the Ghana Boxing Authority (GBA), held an exhibition during the fifth fight night of the third edition of the Ghana Professional Boxing League at the Bukom Boxing Arena in Accra.
As a seasoned sports administrator, Mr. Johnson, who has previously held positions in Ghana Bodybuilding, Taekwondo, Shooting, and Table Tennis, highlighted the transformative power of sports. He encouraged individuals with disabilities to take up sports seriously, emphasizing that sports can change lives.
Although Ghana’s boxing scene still has room for growth, Johnson credited former GBA presidents Lawyers Moses Foh Amoaning and Peter Zwennes for elevating the sport’s profile on the global stage. He noted the increase in boxing promotions and the rising participation of boxers, which he believes is a positive trend.
He also called on companies and philanthropists to support disability sports and reflected on his 14 years of dedication and service in the National Sports Authority (NSA), making him one of its most experienced technical officials.
A well-rounded sportsman, Patrick Johnson is also the Vice Chairman of the Association of Professional Boxing Commission (APBC), responsible for championship belts. He is an active football, volleyball, and table tennis player and a proud member of the Love Community Chapel, where he sings in the choir. Academically, he holds a Master’s Degree from Malaysia’s OUM and studied at the Accra Institute of Technology (AIT) in Ghana.
