Former Premier League striker Darren Bent has praised Thomas Partey for his exceptional performance in Arsenal’s 2-2 draw with Liverpool at the Emirates Stadium on October 27, 2024. Playing in an unusual right-back role, the Ghanaian international stood out, drawing commendations for his defensive skills.
Speaking on talkSPORT, Bent acknowledged initial concerns about Partey’s ability to contain Liverpool’s offensive threats in his new position. Yet, he noted that Partey’s defensive work, especially his effective tackles on Liverpool winger Luis Diaz, ultimately led to Diaz’s substitution by Liverpool coach Arne Slot.
“Thomas Partey played like an old-fashioned fullback, going wide on the first challenge. He did that on Luis Diaz, and it seemed like Diaz couldn’t recover. They started lofting balls over the top because Partey isn’t the quickest,” Bent explained. “But it worked, and that’s why they took [Diaz] off. Partey was outstanding in that area, and he was exceptional throughout,” he added.
Partey will aim to retain his spot in the starting lineup as Arsenal heads to St. James’ Park to face Newcastle United on Saturday.
