Three Nigerians Step Forward to Aid Ailing Football Legend Peter Fregene

Former Nigerian international and renowned sports journalist Segun Odegbami has announced that three generous Nigerians have volunteered to cover the medical expenses of Peter Fregene, a former national team goalkeeper and Olympian, currently critically ill at Obule Medical Centre in Sapele, Delta State.

Odegbami expressed immense gratitude, writing, “The Creator of Life has shown up. What Peter Fregene needs most now are our collective prayers that the will of His Creator be done!”

Fregene, a key figure in Nigerian football during the 1968 Olympics, has been facing significant health challenges for some time. His situation has raised concern and attracted support from the sports community and well-wishers alike.

The donations, according to Odegbami, are being handled by Fregene’s wife, Tina, who has been steadfastly by his side throughout his medical journey.

Odegbami’s initial call for help was spurred by a distressing image of Fregene, prompting him to make a public appeal. While past philanthropists such as Femi Otedola and Mike Adenuga have contributed to similar causes, Odegbami expressed frustration with the lack of sustainable support systems for retired athletes.

He questioned why the Nigerian government has not established a welfare scheme to assist aging sports veterans, citing the continued neglect of former national heroes like Fregene.

Although touched by the response, Odegbami clarified that he is not involved in any fundraising activities and urged any further assistance to go through Fregene’s family. He also thanked Nigerians for their concern and support in this difficult time.
