Nigeria’s Super Falcons have long been a dominant force in African women’s football, with iconic strikers like Mercy Akide, Perpetua Nkwocha, and Asisat Oshoala leading the charge. As Oshoala’s era begins to wind down, the search for a new goal-scoring queen intensifies. Among the most promising candidates is Edna Imade, a rising star in Spanish football whose journey from hardship to greatness could make her Nigeria’s next attacking weapon.
A Story of Resilience and Hope
Born in Benin City, Nigeria, in 2000, Edna’s story began with her mother’s courageous journey in search of a better life. Pregnant with Edna and her twin brother, Paul, her mother navigated the perilous Sahara Desert and eventually reached Morocco. Three months later, Edna was born, and the family continued their journey by boat to Spain, where they sought safety and a fresh start.
Upon arrival, Edna’s father was detained and deported, leaving her mother to care for the newborn twins on her own. Struggling with language barriers and financial hardship, the family relied on welfare and small earnings from selling scarves on the streets. Yet, through all the adversity, Edna’s mother instilled in her children a deep sense of resilience.
The Making of a Footballer
Raised in Seville, Edna adapted to her Spanish surroundings, developing a distinct Andalusian accent. Football became her escape, offering her a way out of the difficulties she faced. She began playing at just six years old, initially with boys’ teams in the town of Carmona. Her exceptional skills quickly emerged, and she later transitioned to indoor football, where she scored nearly 100 goals in just two seasons with Nervión in the second Andalusian women’s division.
In 2019, Edna took her talents to Málaga CF Femenino in the Reto Iberdrola league, marking the beginning of her professional career. Her stellar performances earned her a move to Cacereño Femenino, where she continued her development. With her speed, strength, and skill, she quickly became a standout.
In the following season, Edna moved to Granada CF, where she had a strong debut campaign, scoring five goals in 28 appearances. This season, she’s been in superb form, netting five goals in her first eight league matches. Her powerful performances, including scoring twice against Eibar and a brace against Sevilla, have made her one of Spain’s most exciting attacking talents.
Could Edna Imade Be Nigeria’s Next Star?
With the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations fast approaching, the Super Falcons are undergoing a transformation under coach Justin Madugu. The team is seeking fresh talents to reclaim their title from current champions South Africa, and Imade’s inclusion would provide them with a powerful attacking option.
While Edna has yet to visit Nigeria, she remains connected to her family in Benin City. Her mother dreams of returning to their homeland but has been held back by safety concerns. However, playing for Nigeria would offer Edna the opportunity to reconnect with her roots and embrace a new chapter in her football career.
As the Super Falcons look to maintain their dominance, Edna Imade’s talent and inspiring story could become the spark they need to continue their legacy at the top of African women’s football.
