Flying Eagles Coach Opens Doors to European Talent Ahead of U-20 AFCON Quest

In a bold move to strengthen Nigeria’s Flying Eagles squad, head coach Aliyu Zubairu has announced that European-based Nigerian talents will be considered for the team as they prepare for the U-20 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) in South Africa. Following a hard-fought WAFU B U-20 Championship victory in Togo, where the team defeated Ghana 2-1 in the final, Zubairu is keen on adding international experience to the mix, with the squad now eyeing continental glory.

Zubairu, speaking to the Sports Writers Association of Nigeria (SWAN) in Ilorin, assured fans that talented youngsters playing abroad will have a fair chance to compete for a spot in the team, provided they meet his high standards. “We will not hinder their participation and are committed to selecting those with the necessary skills,” he affirmed.

Among those likely to receive invitations are exciting prospects like Ebenezer Akinsanmiro of Inter Milan (currently on loan at Sampdoria), OGC Nice forward Vince Orakpo, and Genk’s promising left-back Christian Akpan. Additional reinforcements could include players from leagues across Europe, such as Andrew Idoko of Hapoel Jerusalem and Onyebuchi Obasi of Valerenga, whose talents have garnered attention in their respective clubs.

Defensive issues are a priority, as Zubairu has voiced concerns about the team’s vulnerability at the back, noting that they conceded goals in every match of the WAFU B Championship. “This vulnerability cannot be overlooked on a larger stage,” he stated, signaling his intent to bolster the defense for a more robust showing in South Africa.

Historically, the Flying Eagles hold an impressive record at the U-20 AFCON, with seven championships to their name. However, the last victory came in 2015, under the leadership of future stars Taiwo Awoniyi and Obinna Nwobodo. Now, with a potential blend of homegrown and international talents, Zubairu hopes to reclaim this prestigious title and solidify Nigeria’s dominance in African youth football.
