In a passionate call to revive Ghana’s Black Stars, former international defender Rashid Sumaila has emphasized the importance of squad consistency. Speaking to Bryt FM, Sumaila urged head coach Otto Addo to build a stable core within the team to restore the country’s football prestige.
Ghana, a four-time AFCON champion, faces the risk of missing the upcoming 2025 tournament in Morocco after recent setbacks against Sudan. Despite their struggles on the international stage, many Black Stars players are shining at their clubs in Europe—a contrast that Sumaila believes can be fixed through better team-building strategies.
Reflecting on past successes, Sumaila highlighted how maintaining a strong, consistent lineup under previous coaches had led to better performances. “Avram Grant thrived because he had a team that played together for years,” he explained, underscoring the value of squad stability.
Sumaila called for at least 50% of the current players to remain as the foundation of the team, which he believes will help the Black Stars “thrive.” With key matches against Angola and Niger in November, the Black Stars need to win both to keep their AFCON hopes alive, while also relying on favorable results for Sudan.
