Fueling the Derby: Iñaki Williams Draws Strength from Ghanaian Roots

As the Basque Derby approaches, Athletic Club’s Iñaki Williams isn’t just preparing on the pitch—his heritage is playing a key role in his recovery and readiness for the clash against Real Sociedad at San Mamés this Sunday.

After bouncing back from a recent injury, the 30-year-old Ghanaian forward has returned to full training. On social media platform X, Williams gave fans a glimpse into his recovery routine, sharing a photo of his hearty Ghanaian meals. The caption read, “Carrying the body in the best way,” showcasing his commitment to both performance and culture.

Williams credits his strength to traditional dishes like fufu and nkate nkwan (groundnut soup), staples of Ghanaian cuisine made from cassava and peanuts. These meals, rich in nutrients and flavor, have been instrumental in powering his comeback.

This season, Williams has already made 12 appearances in La Liga, notching three goals and four assists. With his body fueled and his heritage celebrated, he’s ready to make an impact in the iconic derby.
