Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Vice President George Afriyie has cast a shadow over the Black Stars’ chances of qualifying for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), following a disappointing start to their qualification campaign. Despite hopes for a fifth continental title, Ghana has struggled in the qualifiers, failing to secure a win in their first four matches.
The Black Stars began their journey with a 1-0 loss to Angola, followed by a 1-1 draw against Niger in Berkane. Hopes of redemption in their doubleheader against Sudan were dashed, with a goalless draw in Accra followed by a 2-0 loss in Sudan. As a result, Ghana sits third in Group F with only two points.
In an interview with Pure FM in Kumasi, Afriyie admitted that while anything is possible in football, the chances of qualification now appear slim. He expressed disappointment over Ghana’s failure to qualify for the expanded AFCON tournament in Morocco, calling it “a disaster” for the national team.
“It’s worrying because the tournament has been expanded, yet we still struggle to qualify. To me, it’s a disaster,” Afriyie said. Ghana’s final push for qualification will come with matches against Angola on November 15 in Luanda and Niger on November 18 at Accra Sports Stadium.
