Kurt Okraku, the President of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), is pushing hard for the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology in the Ghana Premier League’s second round, scheduled to kick off in January 2025. Following a two-day session last week, where top officials from FIFA—Inokuchi Takaaki and Michael Bailey—shared insights into the operational aspects of VAR, Okraku expressed his commitment to elevating officiating standards within the league.
The recent meeting between the GFA and FIFA provided valuable technical guidance on the setup and functionality of VAR, which aims to minimize officiating errors and improve match quality. Alex Kotey, the GFA Referees Manager and the designated head of the VAR team, echoed Okraku’s enthusiasm in an interview, confirming that the league president is determined to see this technology become a reality in the Ghanaian top-flight.
Despite the momentum, the Ghana FA now awaits FIFA’s official go-ahead to launch the implementation process. Okraku remains optimistic that introducing VAR will be a significant step forward for football in Ghana, contributing to fairer and more transparent officiating.
