Rennais Right-Back Faces Uncertain Recovery Period After Ligue 1 Clash
Stade Rennais suffered a blow in their Ligue 1 clash against Lille on Sunday evening, as Ghanaian defender Alidu Seidu sustained a serious knee injury.
The 24-year-old Black Stars right-back was forced off the pitch after just 17 minutes following a troubling landing that resulted in a suspected cruciate ligament rupture in his left knee. Medical staff attended to Seidu on the field before he was substituted, with Senegalese defender Mikayil Faye stepping in to replace him. Seidu was later seen on crutches, further amplifying concerns about the severity of his condition.
Rennais manager Jorge Sampaoli addressed the media post-match, saying, “I can’t diagnose; we will do tests tomorrow.” A scan scheduled for Monday will determine the full extent of Seidu’s injury and the recovery time required.
Seidu, who joined Rennais in January 2024, has been instrumental for the Red and Blacks this season, even earning the club’s Player of the Month award in September. Unfortunately, this is not the first time injuries have plagued his year, as he also missed Ghana’s recent Africa Cup of Nations qualifier against Niger.
In a tightly contested match, Edon Zhegrova’s first-half strike ultimately secured a 1-0 victory for Lille at Decathlon Arena-Stade Pierre-Mauroy.
