The Ghana Football Association’s (GFA) referees manager, Alexander Kotey, recently shared that the Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology will not be implemented across all venues in the Ghana Premier League. Instead, VAR will only be utilized at stadiums hosting matches that are broadcast live on television.

In a recent interview with Asempa FM, Kotey explained that the logistical and technological requirements make it challenging to deploy VAR across all league grounds. This announcement follows a critical meeting held between GFA officials and a FIFA delegation in Accra, aimed at laying the groundwork for VAR’s introduction in Ghana’s domestic leagues. The two-day event, termed the VAR kick-off meeting, is a prerequisite in FIFA’s Implementation Assessment Approval Program, essential for any association adopting the technology.

Attended by Alex Kotey and the GFA’s General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo, the meeting represents a step forward, yet it has stirred mixed reactions among Ghanaian football fans. On social media, some fans are questioning whether VAR is a necessary investment for the league at this stage, given the financial and infrastructural challenges the sport faces locally.
