In a devastating turn of events, Ghanaian international Alidu Seidu has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after suffering a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament (ACL) during Stade Rennais’ Ligue 1 clash against Lille.
The incident occurred just 17 minutes into the match on Sunday, with Seidu landing awkwardly during a defensive play. His immediate discomfort prompted the medical team to intervene, and despite their efforts, the defender was unable to continue. Mikayil Faye replaced him, and Seidu later left the stadium on crutches, a stark indication of the injury’s severity.
Post-match scans confirmed the worst: a torn ACL in his left knee. Seidu is set to undergo surgery in the coming days, which will sideline him for the remainder of the 2024/25 season. Rennais manager Jorge Sampaoli had hinted at the seriousness of the injury immediately after the game, stating, “I can’t diagnose; we will do tests tomorrow.” The following day, the club confirmed the grim diagnosis.
This marks a crushing blow for both Stade Rennais and the 23-year-old defender, who had established himself as a linchpin in the squad since joining in January 2024. Seidu’s stellar performances earned him the club’s Player of the Month award in September, and he had featured prominently in 11 matches this season.
Fans and teammates alike are rallying behind the Ghanaian star as he begins his long road to recovery. His absence will undoubtedly leave a void in Rennais’ defense as they push forward in the Ligue 1 campaign.
