In the lead-up to the 2025 CAF Presidential election, Ghana Football Association (GFA) President Kurt Okraku is rallying West African support to re-elect CAF President Dr. Patrice Motsepe. Okraku, who also serves as President of the West African Football Union (WAFU) B, has emerged as a key ally in mobilizing endorsements for Motsepe, a South African mining magnate and prominent football figure.
Motsepe’s first term, marked by increased funding for Zonal Unions and Member Associations across Africa, has drawn praise from WAFU B. The union, comprising West African football federations, officially endorsed his re-election during the CAF General Assembly in October 2024, with Okraku at the forefront of this campaign.
Under Motsepe’s leadership, CAF has seen significant reforms and a focus on financial health, developments that Okraku and WAFU B believe will benefit African football if continued. The upcoming election, scheduled for March 12, 2025, in Cairo, Egypt, will be a crucial moment, with CAF members set to vote on leadership positions that include not only the presidency but also various executive committee roles and FIFA representation spots.
As speculation grows, Okraku remains committed to supporting Motsepe, noting the strides made under his guidance. With candidates required to submit nominations by November 12, 2024, the possibility of challengers looms, though none have yet come forward. The 62-year-old Motsepe, who made history as the first Black African billionaire on Forbes’ list, seeks to continue his mission to uplift African football.
