Former Black Stars Management Committee member Ernest Thompson has disclosed a behind-the-scenes conflict involving ex-Ghana coach Kwesi Appiah and key national team players Andre Ayew, Jordan Ayew, and Mubarak Wakaso. According to Thompson, Appiah was on the verge of dropping the trio from the Black Stars due to unresolved tensions but was persuaded otherwise by the management committee.
The revelation comes after the Ghana Football Association dissolved the Black Stars Management Committee on November 22, following the team’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations. Reflecting on his time with the committee, Thompson shared insights into the incident during an interview with Joy Sports.
“At one point, Kwesi Appiah had issues with Andre, Jordan, and Wakaso. He wanted to drop them from the team,” Thompson explained. “He even announced his decision, but the management committee intervened.”
Thompson emphasized the critical role the committee played in defusing the situation, particularly by engaging the players’ father, Ghanaian football legend Abedi Pele.
“We urged Kwesi to approach Abedi Pele and discuss the matter. You can’t treat Abedi’s children that way without his knowledge. It also took the efforts of Alhaji Hearts, who we called to mediate and talk to the boys. Eventually, Kwesi agreed, brought them back, and they went on to help the team.”
Thompson also highlighted the often-overlooked contributions of the Black Stars Management Committee, describing their role as essential to navigating conflicts within the national team.
While this incident was resolved amicably, it underscores the challenges of managing egos and expectations in high-stakes football environments.
