Lookman Celebrates ‘Happy Sunday’ as Atalanta Downs Napoli in CAF POTY Statement Performance

Ademola Lookman has made his intentions clear in the race for the CAF Player of the Year award after a stellar showing against Napoli. With a well-taken brace, the Super Eagles forward helped Atalanta BC overpower Napoli 2-0, asserting his status as one of Africa’s top talents this season.

Lookman’s goals came at a crucial time, and his Man of the Match performance saw him extend his goal tally to seven in twelve Serie A games for the 2024-25 season. The Nigerian shared his triumph on social media, posting a photo of himself holding the Man of the Match award with the caption, “Happy Sunday from Naples.”

Napoli, missing their own Super Eagles star, Victor Osimhen—who recently moved to Galatasaray on loan—struggled to mount a comeback in front of their home fans. This time last year, Osimhen had played a critical role in helping Napoli counter one of Lookman’s goals, but on this occasion, it was Lookman’s turn to shine.

Lookman opened the scoring in the 10th minute with a clinical finish, slotting a first-time shot past Alex Meret. Not long after, he doubled Atalanta’s lead with a long-range strike from outside the box, sealing the win and sending Atalanta within three points of Napoli at the top of the table.

This decisive display strengthens Lookman’s CAF POTY campaign, marking him as a standout player on the European stage and for Nigerian football.
