Ademola Lookman has gracefully handled the mounting excitement around his nomination for the African Men’s Footballer of the Year. The Atalanta star, who shares the shortlist with prominent talents like William Troost-Ekong, PSG’s Achraf Hakimi, and Borussia Dortmund’s Serhou Guirassy, insists that he’s approaching this award season with a level-headed focus.
Lookman has enjoyed a meteoric rise in the last year, especially after helping Atalanta secure the UEFA Europa League, the club’s first major trophy since their Coppa Italia victory in 1963. He also holds the distinction of being the only African player nominated for the Ballon d’Or, where he ranked 14th, ahead of notable players like Chelsea’s Cole Palmer and Arsenal’s Bukayo Saka. This accolade may give the Nigerian forward an edge in the African POTY race, but Lookman remains unfazed.
In a recent conversation with 54footballx, Lookman revealed that he isn’t feeling any extra pressure despite the heightened expectations. “I don’t think I am feeling additional pressure. I have kept the same mindset and work ethic. I’m just focused on giving my best on the pitch,” he said.
Expressing what winning the award would mean to him, Lookman shared, “Winning would be special for me, my family, my people, and my country. But that’s the future. Right now, I’m focused on doing my best every single day.”
Lookman’s impressive performance this season has seen him tally 10 goal involvements for Atalanta and two goals in the Super Eagles’ 2025 AFCON qualifiers. His form has attracted interest from clubs like PSG, though his next move remains uncertain. For now, Lookman’s eyes are set on his immediate goals, embodying a grounded approach to what may become a defining moment in his career.
