Michail Antonio Urges Mohammed Kudus to Strive for African Footballer of the Year Amid Ghana’s Challenges

West Ham Striker Backs Teammate’s Potential but Calls for National Support

West Ham United forward Michail Antonio has expressed his belief that Ghanaian star Mohammed Kudus has the potential to win the coveted African Footballer of the Year award in the future. Speaking in an interview with Joy Sports, Antonio praised Kudus’ immense talent but emphasized the need for greater support from both his team and the Ghanaian national side.

Kudus, 24, has been a standout performer for Ghana since debuting in 2019, scoring in his first game against South Africa. With 38 caps and eight international goals—including standout performances at the 2022 FIFA World Cup and the Africa Cup of Nations—the young midfielder has established himself as a key figure for the Black Stars.

In his debut Premier League season, Kudus impressed with 10 goals in 41 appearances for West Ham, further solidifying his reputation as one of Africa’s brightest talents.

“Mo [Kudus] definitely has the talent to win African Footballer of the Year—100%,” Antonio stated. However, he acknowledged the fierce competition from established stars like Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mané, and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang.

Antonio highlighted that individual success often relies on the strength of the team. While Ghana boasts a rich footballing history, Antonio noted that the current national team must improve to enable players like Kudus to reach their full potential on the global stage.

“For him to achieve that [award], he and Ghana, as a team, have to do more,” Antonio stressed. “Right now, Ghana isn’t at the level they should be, and that affects players like Kudus who have the talent to shine even brighter.”

Kudus remains an exciting prospect, and Antonio’s confidence underscores the midfielder’s capacity to reach the pinnacle of African football—provided both he and Ghana rise to the occasion.
