Nigerian international and Nantes forward, Moses Simon, has expressed confidence in the Super Eagles’ chances of qualifying for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, despite their current struggles in the qualifying rounds.
The Super Eagles are in a challenging position, sitting 4th in their group with just six games remaining in the qualification process. Their journey to the World Cup has been far from smooth, with disappointing results under former coach Finidi George. The team endured a series of frustrating draws and even a shocking loss to Benin, leaving them four points behind Rwanda in the race for qualification.
However, under interim manager Augustine Eguavoen, Nigeria has shown a resurgence, winning three of their last four matches, securing their place at the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Despite the setbacks, Simon remains optimistic about the team’s prospects.
“We have the quality, we have what it takes to win. We don’t believe that we are not going to the World Cup,” Simon told BBC. He acknowledged the absence of key players in previous matches but is confident that their return will strengthen the squad moving forward.
With the qualifiers set to resume in 2025, Nigeria faces a crucial task, needing to win at least five of their remaining matches to stand a realistic chance of reaching the global stage once again. The Super Eagles are set to face tough opponents, including Rwanda (home and away), Zimbabwe (home), South Africa (away), Lesotho (away), and Benin (home).
Despite the odds, Simon’s belief in the team’s ability to turn things around gives hope to Nigerian fans dreaming of World Cup glory in 2026, hosted by the USA, Mexico, and Canada.
