The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) is seeking financial support from prominent corporate sponsors like Dangote Group, MTN, BUA, and Baba Ijebu to secure funding for a foreign-based coach for the Super Eagles. This move comes after a challenging period in which the NFF struggled to clear an 18-month debt owed to former coach Jose Peseiro, which was only settled following the intervention of President Tinubu’s administration earlier this year.
NFF President Ibrahim Gusau shared this update on Wednesday during his presentation before the House Committee on Sports, where he defended the federation’s 2025 budget proposal. Gusau disclosed that discussions with these corporate sponsors are underway to secure consistent financial backing, which would prevent further payment delays and allow the NFF to proceed with hiring a foreign coach after a recent setback involving Bruno Labbadia.
While Gusau acknowledged that interim coach Augustine Eguavoen has made progress, he emphasized that a long-term appointment of a foreign coach is the goal, provided the financial issues are resolved. He noted, “Though Eguavoen is doing well, if we must engage a coach, we must make sure that the issue of payment is sorted.”
The NFF aims to create a sustainable financial structure through sponsorships, ensuring that the Super Eagles are well-supported without recurrent payment disruptions.
