Former Ghanaian striker Prince Tagoe believes the introduction of Video Assistant Referee (VAR) technology could significantly enhance the Ghana Premier League’s appeal. He voiced his optimism following recent discussions between the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and FIFA about adopting VAR in Ghana’s top football league.
Tagoe noted that persistent concerns over officiating have impacted fans’ enjoyment, making games less exciting. According to him, implementing VAR could restore trust in match outcomes by providing fairer calls on goals, fouls, and offsides.
During an interview with Angel TV, Tagoe urged GFA officials to manage any funds received from FIFA for this initiative wisely, emphasizing the need for financial responsibility to ensure the technology’s success. He expressed hope for a positive outcome from the GFA-FIFA discussions, calling on officials to leverage this opportunity to boost the league’s reputation.
“I think the VAR is a good thing because the way we complain about officiating all the time makes the league boring,” he said. “I believe if the VAR is adopted, it will help us with officiating issues concerning goals, fouls, and offsides. I hope the GFA uses any support from FIFA appropriately to make the league attractive,” he added.
