For Razak Simpson, making his debut for the Black Stars was a moment of pride, but it was the words of captain Jordan Ayew that truly propelled him to shine on the international stage.
The Nations FC defender was a standout figure during Ghana’s final two 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers. Despite the team’s struggles, Simpson’s performances were a rare bright spot. He impressed in the 1-1 draw against Angola and delivered another composed display in the narrow 2-1 defeat to Niger.
In an interview with Newton Lartey TV, Simpson revealed how Jordan Ayew’s encouragement gave him the confidence to perform at his best.
“He really had an impact on me,” Simpson shared. “Before the game against Angola, he came to my room and told me, ‘You’re here because you can play. You wouldn’t be here if you couldn’t.’ Those words stayed with me. He encouraged me to feel free, not be afraid, and even said I could ask him for anything.”
The young defender proved he belonged at the heart of Ghana’s defense with assured performances that justified his call-up. His rise has given fans hope for the future of the Black Stars backline.
However, for the first time in two decades, Ghana failed to qualify for the AFCON after a disappointing campaign. The team finished bottom of Group F, with no wins in six games. The last time the Black Stars missed the tournament was in 2004.
Now, with a promising talent like Razak Simpson emerging and seasoned leaders like Jordan Ayew fostering unity and belief, Ghana will look to regroup and focus on the 2026 World Cup qualifiers, which resume in March 2025.
