The Final Countdown: Nigeria’s Super Eagles Gear Up for Crucial AFCON 2025 Qualifiers
The Nigerian national team, the Super Eagles, are set to return to the pitch in their final two qualifiers for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations. Currently leading Group D with 10 points, Nigeria needs just one point from the upcoming matches against Benin Republic on November 14 in Abidjan and Rwanda on November 18 in Uyo to book their spot in Morocco for AFCON 2025.
Interim head coach Augustine Eguavoen has submitted his squad choices to the Nigeria Football Federation, although the official roster is yet to be announced. As anticipation builds, here’s a glimpse into who’s likely to be part of the campaign, who’s missing, and who might be making their Super Eagles debut in these decisive games.
Injuries and Absentees: Who’s Out?
Several key players are already ruled out due to injury, including West Brom defender Semi Ajayi, a mainstay throughout the qualifiers, and Sevilla’s Chidera Ejuke, who recently rejoined the squad after a long absence but has since been sidelined. Terem Moffi from OGC Nice and Peter Olayinka of Red Star Belgrade are both in recovery, while Tyronne Ebuehi (Empoli) continues to work his way back from a serious injury. Zaidu Sanusi, Porto’s left-back, is also racing against time to regain full fitness following an eight-month injury layoff.
On the Fence: Who’s in Doubt?
While the Super Eagles aim for stability, a few players face uncertainty due to club form and fitness issues. Kelechi Iheanacho recently made a splash with a brace in Sevilla’s Copa del Rey but has been struggling for consistency in La Liga. Real Sociedad’s Umar Sadiq has also had a challenging year with just one goal to his name, which may impact his chances of selection. Limited playing time at their clubs also leaves goalkeeper Francis Uzoho (Omonia Nicosia) and striker Paul Onuachu (Southampton) on the fringes.
New Blood on the Horizon
This final stretch could allow Eguavoen to bring in some fresh faces. West Brom’s Josh Maja, in excellent form, could be set for a second Super Eagles cap, while Joe Aribo, reinvigorated at Southampton, is likely in the mix. Other promising talents include Getafe’s Christantus Uche and Gabriel Osho from Auxerre, who could fill the void left by the injured Ajayi.
Attacking reinforcements might also come in the form of Chuba Akpom (Ajax), Victor Olatunji (Sparta Prague), and Tolu Arokodare (Genk). With eight goals and three assists in 18 matches, Cyriel Dessers of Rangers has made a strong case for a recall.
Core Squad: Who’s Likely In?
Among the regulars expected to take the field, team captain William Troost-Ekong is set to lead the Super Eagles alongside stalwarts Victor Osimhen, Wilfred Ndidi, Ademola Lookman, and Moses Simon. Others anticipated in the lineup include Samuel Chukwueze, Frank Onyeka, Victor Boniface, Alex Iwobi, and Calvin Bassey.
Previous Encounters and Final Push for Qualification
In their previous encounters, Nigeria secured a 3-0 victory over Benin in Uyo and held Rwanda to a goalless draw in Kigali. With AFCON 2025 qualification nearly within reach, the Super Eagles will aim to conclude the Group D stage on a high note and punch their ticket to Morocco.
