Salary Arrears Cast Doubt on Otto Addo’s Future as Black Stars Coach

In a revealing update, Henry Asante Twum, Communications Director of the Ghana Football Association (GFA), has disclosed that Black Stars head coach Otto Addo and his backroom staff are owed several months of unpaid salaries. While the exact duration of the arrears remains uncertain, the issue has fueled speculation about Addo’s future following Ghana’s failure to secure a spot in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON).

Speaking to Joy FM, Asante Twum acknowledged the delay in payments but pointed out that resolving the matter is outside the GFA’s control. “I am not sure of the exact duration, but there are salaries in arrears. We owe him [Otto Addo] a few months, and it’s not just him but also the backroom staff,” he said.

Responsibility for the payments falls under the Ministry of Youth and Sports, which has yet to confirm a timeline for clearing the debts. Asante Twum also addressed the wider implications, noting that any decision to terminate Addo’s contract would involve careful consultation with the Ministry.

“There’s every need to consult the Ministry because, ultimately, if the coach is sacked and there’s an issue of paying him off, that responsibility lies with the Ministry, not the GFA,” he explained.

Amid growing calls for Addo’s dismissal, the unresolved salary arrears further complicate an already tense situation for the Black Stars’ technical team.
