Ghana Legend Sam Johnson Pushes for Local Talent in Angola and Niger Showdown
As the final stretch of the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers approaches, former Black Stars defender Sam Johnson is urging Ghana’s football authorities to rely on homegrown talent in the decisive matches against Angola and Niger. With the team’s qualification prospects hanging by a thread, Johnson believes this is a prime opportunity to give local players valuable exposure on the continental stage.
A Bold Call for Local Talent
Johnson, who once played for Hearts of Oak and Fenerbahçe, sees the games as a rare chance to build up local players’ confidence and experience. “I really want the local guys to go and play in these last AFCON matches,” Johnson shared with Graphic Sports. He envisions a lineup that combines promising domestic players with select foreign-based talents to create a foundation for future tournaments.
Concerns Over Quality and League Standards
Despite his support for showcasing local players, Johnson voiced concerns over the current state of Ghana’s local league. He worries the declining quality may hinder their ability to compete internationally, especially with the Black Stars needing wins. “The question is, which of these players would you invite? Our league’s standard is low, and you can’t call up these players if we want to avoid heavy losses,” Johnson explained.
The former defender lamented the waning popularity of the domestic league, with poor attendance and dwindling fan enthusiasm, even for clubs with loyal supporters like Hearts of Oak. “When was the last time you saw Accra Sports Stadium full, apart from Black Stars games?” he questioned.
Otto Addo’s Selection Awaits
With Ghana currently in third place in Group F, Coach Otto Addo is expected to announce his squad this week. Sitting two points behind Angola and Sudan, the Black Stars’ hopes are slim, relying on Sudan losing their final two games to advance. Johnson’s call may add pressure on Addo’s selection, putting the spotlight on homegrown players and the future of Ghanaian football.
