Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) Communications Director, Ibrahim Sannie Daara, has expressed disappointment over the treatment of veteran forward Andre Ayew by former Black Stars coach Otto Addo, citing it as a factor in Ghana’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 20 years.
Speaking to Joy FM, Sannie Daara criticized Addo’s decision to exclude Ayew from the squad during a crucial period, despite the player’s readiness to contribute. Ayew, a seasoned leader of the team, had not publicly announced his retirement and was actively playing at the time.
“The decision not to bring Andre along, especially when he had not taken himself out of the team, was premature,” Daara stated. “Otto should have left the window open for him to make the decision himself. It would have earned him more respect and goodwill from both fans and former players.”
Daara also referenced concerns from ex-players about how Ghana’s football management often mishandles the retirement of key players. He believes Addo, despite his coaching skills, could have managed the situation better.
Andre Ayew last featured for the Black Stars in March friendlies against Nigeria and Uganda. He has since returned to club football with French Ligue 1 side Le Havre, signing a short-term deal until the end of the season.
Ghana, a four-time AFCON champion, ended their qualification campaign at the bottom of Group F, marking a disappointing chapter in their football history.
