Since joining Chippa United in 2022, Super Eagles goalkeeper Stanley Nwabali has made a name for himself in the South African Premier League, impressing fans and earning respect from peers. His standout performances in 2023 saw him earn a national call-up to represent Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), where he shone brightly, posting four clean sheets as the Super Eagles finished in a respectable second place.
In the aftermath of his AFCON success, rumors linked Nwabali to some of South Africa’s top clubs, including the prestigious Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates. However, negotiations failed to bear fruit, keeping the 28-year-old at Chippa United for the time being. The Chiefs eventually signed Rwandan goalkeeper Fiacre Ntwari, dashing Nwabali’s hopes of a high-profile move.
But in a recent interview with Metro FM Sports, Nwabali admitted his deep desire to play for Kaizer Chiefs, saying, “With all my heart, I wanted to join Kaizer Chiefs. Even though I wasn’t necessarily a fan, it’s the kind of club I dreamed of representing in South Africa.” He expressed that the lack of agreement may have been due to unrealistic expectations from clubs looking to negotiate his transfer.
Despite his dream transfer eluding him, Nwabali has begun the current season strongly, earning a clean sheet in his opening seven matches. Now, he aims to continue his strong form at Chippa United and hopes that a larger move could still be on the horizon.
