“Stonebwoy Laments Black Stars’ Shock Absence from 2025 AFCON”

Ghanaian music icon, Livingstone Etse Satekla, widely known as Stonebwoy, has voiced his shock and disappointment over the Black Stars’ failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON). Speaking in an interview with Asempa Sports, the celebrated artist described the situation as “unbelievable” and called for urgent reforms in Ghanaian football.

The Black Stars, under the leadership of coach Otto Addo, endured a dismal qualifying campaign. After six matches in Group F, the team finished at the bottom with just three points, failing to register a single win. Their record of three defeats and three draws marked one of the darkest chapters in Ghana’s football history.

Reflecting on the national team’s absence from the prestigious tournament, Stonebwoy shared his personal connection with AFCON, recalling his excitement during the last edition he attended.

“Last AFCON, I was there, and I witnessed it. You can tell I love and enjoyed it. It’s sad. I can’t believe it. I’m still in disbelief, but that is the reality,” the VGMA Artist of the Year remarked.

The multiple award-winning Afropop, Afro-dancehall, and reggae artist also highlighted the need for immediate action to rebuild the Black Stars. “This tells you that we have things to work on with the team, Ghana Football Association. I hope that this is taken care of so that next time we make it,” he urged.

Stonebwoy lamented the absence of the four-time African champions, emphasizing their importance to the tournament’s appeal. “At least African Cup, Ghana has always been a beautiful team to watch. I don’t know what the world will be watching now without Ghana. I know they will miss the Ghana team, but it’s unfortunate,” he concluded.

This marks the first time in two decades, since 2004, that Ghana has failed to secure a place in Africa’s biggest football competition—a stark reminder of the need for transformation within the country’s footballing structures.
