Sunday Oliseh Backs Eguavoen: “He Has My Full Support”

Former Super Eagles captain Sunday Oliseh has thrown his weight behind Augustine Eguavoen, the interim coach who recently led Nigeria’s national team to secure qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations.

Speaking to News Central, Oliseh praised Eguavoen’s leadership and called on Nigerians to unite behind the coach.

“Austin Eguavoen is a smart guy. He is not stupid. He has my full support because he’s someone I respect deeply. He’s honest, decent, and a compatriot with whom I’ve shared the struggles of bringing glory to our fatherland,” Oliseh said.

Oliseh reflected on Nigeria’s challenging qualification journey, comparing it to his own experience in 2002 when the team overcame a five-point deficit to secure a World Cup spot. “The task ahead is difficult, but not impossible,” he noted. “In 2002, we had to work hard to qualify, and I believe the Super Eagles can do the same now.”

He also clarified that Eguavoen should not be blamed for the team’s struggles, emphasizing the importance of unity. “Eguavoen is not responsible for the current situation. He stepped in to salvage what was there before him. As Nigerians, the best we can do is support him. He represents all of us, not just himself or his family.”

Eguavoen’s role as interim coach comes at a pivotal time for Nigerian football, and with backing from legends like Oliseh, fans hope the Super Eagles can build on their recent AFCON qualification and achieve even greater success.
