“Super Eagles Lack Creative Spark”: Etim Esin Criticizes Iwobi, Calls for Playmakers

Despite securing qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations, Nigeria’s performances in their final qualifiers against Benin and Rwanda have sparked debate among fans and pundits. The Super Eagles struggled to create chances against their lower-ranked opponents, raising concerns about their ability to compete for the title.

Former Super Eagles midfielder Etim Esin has expressed his dissatisfaction with the current squad’s lack of creativity, particularly in midfield. Speaking to Complete Sports, Esin lamented the absence of a natural playmaker, a role previously mastered by Nigerian legends like Jay-Jay Okocha and Henry Nwosu.

“There’s a glaring lack of a proper number 10 — someone who can dictate the game, deliver key assists, and unsettle defenses. That magic touch is missing,” Esin said.

He also criticized Alex Iwobi, comparing him unfavorably to his legendary cousin, Okocha. “People keep hyping Iwobi, but he can’t do half of what Okocha did. The comparison doesn’t hold water,” he added.

Iwobi, now with Fulham in the English Premier League, has been a consistent presence in the Super Eagles lineup since choosing Nigeria over England in 2015. However, Esin believes the team’s reliance on him highlights the lack of naturally gifted playmakers in the squad.

The 58-year-old, who played for K.S.C. Lokeren in Belgium during his career, emphasized the need for more inventive players to unlock the potential of Nigeria’s attack. He warned that without this creative spark, the team may struggle in the tournament despite their strong roster.

As the Super Eagles prepare for AFCON 2025, fans and critics alike hope for a more inspired display, especially against tougher competition.
