Alan Smith Warns Arsenal to Plan for Life Beyond Partey
Former Arsenal striker Alan Smith has called on the club to prepare for the potential departure of Thomas Partey, whose contract is set to expire next summer. Despite Partey’s strong contributions this season, including his standout role in Arsenal’s 5-1 triumph over Sporting Lisbon in the Champions League, his long-term future at the Emirates remains uncertain.
Smith believes that Arsenal should take a proactive approach by scouting and securing a successor for the Ghanaian midfielder. Speaking to Tribuna.com, he highlighted Tijjani Reijnders as a viable option to step into the role.
“I think Arteta is looking at Tijjani Reijnders because players like Thomas Partey don’t seem capable of what they used to do athletically and can’t cover the pitch as they once did,” Smith remarked.
He also emphasized the importance of continuous investment in the squad: “Arsenal have spent a lot of money, but if they’ve got the funds, you just want to keep improving the squad.”
While Smith’s comments underline the need for succession planning, manager Mikel Arteta has remained composed, choosing not to address Partey’s contract situation publicly.
As the January transfer window approaches, it remains to be seen whether Arsenal will act on Smith’s advice or wait until Partey’s future is officially decided.
