Former Ghanaian forward Augustine Ahinful has urged Black Stars coach Otto Addo to embrace a more attacking style of play, particularly in home matches, as pressure mounts following Ghana’s failure to qualify for the Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 21 years.
Speaking to Joy Sports, Ahinful criticized Addo’s cautious tactics, which often involve deploying two defensive midfielders, regardless of whether Ghana is playing at home or away.
“Otto Addo is always conscious in his approach to the game. I always see him play two defensive midfielders, whether it’s an away or home game,” Ahinful noted. “When you’re playing away, it’s understandable to be cautious, but at home, you must be offensive.”
The Black Stars endured a disappointing qualifying campaign, managing just three points in six matches against Angola, Sudan, and Niger. This poor performance has led to widespread calls for Addo and his coaching staff to step down.
While Addo’s future with the team remains uncertain, Ahinful believes a tactical overhaul is essential if he stays. The former Borussia Dortmund assistant coach has been criticized for failing to inspire an effective attacking unit, leaving Ghana’s supporters frustrated.
The coming months will be crucial for the Black Stars, with fans and analysts alike demanding a change in leadership or a significant shift in approach to restore Ghana’s footballing pride.
