As the countdown to the 2025 Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) begins, African football giants South Africa and Nigeria concluded their international campaigns for 2024 with disappointing defeats, highlighting areas for improvement ahead of the prestigious tournament.
In Montego Bay, Jamaica, South Africa’s Banyana Banyana fell 3-2 to the Reggae Girlz in a thrilling encounter on Monday night. Despite starting strong and taking a 19th-minute lead through Linda Motlhalo, coach Desiree Ellis’ side was unable to maintain their momentum. The first half saw South Africa dominate and neutralize Jamaican talisman Khadija Shaw, preserving a slim 1-0 lead at the break.
The tide turned in the second half when Shaw was substituted, opening space for Jamaica to exploit defensive errors. Vyan Sampson equalized in the 58th minute, followed by Drew Spence’s composed finish five minutes later to make it 2-1. A costly South African lapse allowed McKenna to extend the lead in the 76th minute. Amogelang Motau pulled one back for South Africa in added time, but it was too little, too late.
The defeat leaves South Africa with much to address as they prepare to defend their WAFCON crown in Morocco, starting July 5, 2025.
Meanwhile, Nigeria’s Super Falcons also faced a tough outing, losing 2-1 to France in Angers. Despite being without stars Asisat Oshoala and Rasheedat Ajibade, the Falcons put up a spirited fight. Ifeoma Onumonu scored Nigeria’s sole goal, while goalkeeper Chiamaka Nnadozie delivered an outstanding performance. However, France proved too strong, leaving Nigeria with lessons to ponder ahead of their quest to reclaim the WAFCON title.
As both nations set their sights on continental glory, their recent performances serve as a reminder of the fierce competition awaiting them in Morocco.
