Ghana’s senior national football team, the Black Stars, will close the year 2024 ranked 77th in the world and 14th in Africa on the latest FIFA Rankings. Despite retaining their continental position, their global ranking reflects a turbulent year for the once-proud footballing nation.
Under the leadership of Otto Addo, the Black Stars endured one of their most disappointing campaigns in recent history. The team managed only three wins from 15 matches across all competitions, with just two of those being in official games. Most notably, Ghana failed to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON)—a first in 20 years—after failing to secure a single win in the qualifiers.
In February, Ghana achieved its highest FIFA ranking of the year at 67th. However, a steady decline saw them slip to 73rd in October before dropping to their current position in November. Despite the setbacks, their 14th spot in Africa places them ahead of Zambia and Gabon but behind Cape Verde and Burkina Faso.
Globally, the top ten remains unchanged, with Argentina leading the pack, followed by France, Spain, England, and Brazil rounding out the top five.
As 2024 comes to a close, the Black Stars have their sights set on redemption in 2025. They will resume their 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers in March, facing Chad and Madagascar, hoping to reignite the passion of Ghanaian football fans and rebuild their reputation.
