In a groundbreaking collaboration, the Ghana Football Association (GFA) and the National Road Safety Authority (NRSA) have launched a nationwide campaign to tackle the alarming rate of road accidents in Ghana. The initiative, unveiled on December 4, 2024, at the GFA Headquarters in Accra, seeks to leverage football’s unparalleled influence to promote road safety, especially among the youth.
At the heart of the launch were GFA President Kurt Okraku and NRSA Acting Director-General Ing. David Osafo Adonteng, who emphasized the urgent need for action. With road accidents claiming thousands of lives annually, the campaign aims to make road safety an integral part of the football community’s culture.
“This partnership is more than just an initiative; it’s a call to action,” said GFA General Secretary Prosper Harrison Addo. “Through football’s reach—our matches, platforms, and social media—we’ll champion road safety education and become ambassadors for responsible road use.”
The campaign introduces a multifaceted approach, including defensive driving workshops tailored for football club drivers, strategic road safety messaging at football matches, and engaging fans directly at stadiums. Players and clubs are also being urged to take on active roles as advocates for safer roads.
Ing. Adonteng of NRSA reinforced the importance of this collaboration: “Football holds the power to unite and influence communities. By integrating road safety messages into the beautiful game, we can shift behaviors and save lives.”
Stakeholders from the Driver and Vehicle Licensing Authority (DVLA), Motor Traffic and Transport Department (MTTD), and St. John’s Ambulance joined the launch, symbolizing a united front against road accidents.
This unique fusion of football and public safety underscores the power of sports in driving social change—a partnership destined to make Ghana’s roads safer for all.
