Ghanaian football legend Mohammed Ahmed “Polo” has called on the Ghana Football Association (GFA) to address the challenges plaguing the Black Stars before the resumption of the 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers next year.
The Black Stars recently suffered a disappointing campaign in the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) qualifiers, finishing last in Group F with just three points from six matches. Their record of three defeats and three draws cost them a place in the tournament, raising concerns about the team’s readiness for upcoming international competitions.
Reflecting on the setback, Polo, a key figure in Ghana’s 1978 AFCON-winning squad, urged the GFA to thoroughly analyze the reasons behind the team’s poor performance. Speaking to Pan-Africa Football, Polo stressed the importance of recovery and preparation ahead of World Cup qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025.
“I think recovery is very, very important. We have to find out the reason why we could not qualify for the 2025 AFCON,” Polo stated. “This involves even the players themselves. The coach, Otto Addo, appears likely to stay, so he must take this opportunity to identify the players he wants to work with, establish his philosophy, and resolve the team’s issues.”
Polo also emphasized the critical role of leadership, pointing out the responsibility of both the coach and the GFA in ensuring the team’s revival. “The Ghana FA must find the reasons for our struggles and address them. We are all blaming the coach because he is in charge, but the GFA also plays a pivotal role in shaping the future of Ghanaian football,” he added.
As the Black Stars set their sights on World Cup qualification, Polo’s call for urgent reforms highlights the need for introspection and decisive action to restore the team’s former glory.
