Black Stars defender confident but focused on Ligue 1 survival
Auxerre defender Gideon Mensah has reiterated the team’s primary objective of retaining their Ligue 1 status as they prepare for a challenging clash against Paris Saint-Germain (PSG) this Friday.
Currently sitting on 19 points from 13 matches, Auxerre might appear poised for loftier ambitions, but Mensah is steadfast in his focus.
“Our goal remains the same: we need to stay in Ligue 1,” Mensah declared. “It doesn’t matter whether we finish third, fourth, or fifth—what matters is survival.”
Despite PSG’s formidable unbeaten record in the league, Mensah expressed confidence in Auxerre’s ability to compete. “I’m very confident against PSG. Playing against top teams motivates me. These games push both myself and the team to perform at our best,” he said.
Auxerre’s impressive home record has been pivotal this season, with the club boasting the second-best home form in Ligue 1, behind only PSG. Mensah attributed their strength at Stade de l’Abbé Deschamps to the unwavering support of their fans.
“Since our promotion two seasons ago, our supporters have been our greatest asset. At home, we rarely fear any opponent because even when we struggle physically, the fans lift us,” Mensah added.
As the team gears up for their showdown with PSG, Mensah’s words reflect a blend of realism and determination, underscoring Auxerre’s fight to remain among France’s elite.
