In a moment of brilliance that silenced Nigerian hearts, Sebastien Haller etched his name in African football history.
The Confederation of African Football (CAF) has unveiled the nominees for the prestigious 2024 Goal of the Year award, and among the stellar lineup is Sebastien Haller’s jaw-dropping strike in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) final.
In a tightly contested match between Cote d’Ivoire and Nigeria, Haller’s late heroics sealed a dramatic 2-1 victory for the Elephants.
A Night to Remember
Nigeria’s Super Eagles entered the final with high hopes, bolstered by their strong group-stage performance, including a victory over the host nation. Captain William Troost-Ekong ignited Nigerian dreams with a clinical goal in the 38th minute, giving his side the lead. However, Cote d’Ivoire was far from done.
The turning point came in the second half when Franck Kessie leveled the score, setting the stage for a grandstand finish. With nine minutes remaining, Simon Adingra delivered a pinpoint cross to Haller, who showcased world-class skill. The Ivorian striker effortlessly controlled the ball, outmaneuvered Troost-Ekong, and unleashed a stunning flick past Stanley Nwabali, leaving the Nigerian goalkeeper rooted to the spot.
The Journey to Marrakech
Haller’s spectacular goal not only secured Cote d’Ivoire’s third AFCON title but also earned him a spot on the 11-man shortlist for CAF Goal of the Year. He faces stiff competition from other African stars, including Abdul Aziz Issah (Dreams FC), Aboubakary Koita (Mauritania), Denis Omedi (Kitara FC), Ibrahim Adel (Egypt), and Kevin Pina (Cape Verde).
Other contenders include Angola’s Cristovao Mabululu, Mali’s Nene Dorgeles, Algeria’s duo Saïd Benrahma and Yassine Benzia, and Wessam Abou Ali from Al Ahly.
Nigeria’s Resilience
Despite the heartbreak, the Super Eagles have shown resilience, delivering strong performances in friendlies since their AFCON defeat. The team remains a formidable force, and Nigerian fans will be watching closely as the CAF Awards Gala approaches.
The winner of the Goal of the Year award will be revealed on Monday, December 16, 2024, during the CAF Awards in Marrakech, Morocco.
