Mansfield Town midfielder Hiram Boateng experienced a rollercoaster evening in his side’s 3-1 defeat to Bolton Wanderers in an English League One clash on Tuesday night.
The English-born Ghanaian lit up the first half with a composed finish in the 34th minute, converting a smart pass from Grenadian teammate Lucas Akins to give Mansfield a deserved lead. However, the match took a dramatic turn in the second half.
Boateng’s promising outing unraveled in the 70th minute when he was shown a second yellow card, leaving his team to fend off a Bolton comeback with only 10 men. Bolton wasted no time capitalizing on their advantage, equalizing through Dion Charles just five minutes later.
Nigerian forward Victor Adeboyejo added Bolton’s second goal, set up by English-born Ghanaian substitute Jordi Osei-Tutu. The home side sealed the win in style with John McAtee striking late to ensure all three points stayed with Bolton.
The red card overshadowed Boateng’s second goal of the season in what was his 15th League One appearance. His dismissal proved the turning point, as Mansfield struggled to recover after losing their midfield anchor.
Mansfield Town will now look to bounce back as Boateng serves his suspension, eager to regain momentum in their push for promotion.
