Jonathan Mensah Departs New England Revolution After Challenging Season

In a development marking the end of a notable chapter in Major League Soccer, Ghanaian defender Jonathan Mensah has parted ways with New England Revolution. The club opted not to extend the 33-year-old’s contract following a disappointing 2024 season.

Mensah, a former MLS champion and seasoned leader on the field, joined New England from San Jose Earthquakes earlier this year. However, his time with the Revs was marred by injuries and inconsistent form, limiting him to just eight appearances. New England’s failure to secure a playoff spot further compounded a difficult season for the team and player alike.

Despite the setback, Mensah’s MLS legacy remains strong. Over eight seasons in the league, he has amassed 190 appearances, scored seven goals, and provided three assists. His crowning moments include captaining Columbus Crew to the MLS Cup and Campeones Cup titles in 2020.

Before embarking on his MLS career, the Ashantigold Academy graduate played in Europe for clubs such as Evian in France and Anzhi Makhachkala in Russia. A FIFA U-20 World Cup winner with Ghana in 2009, Mensah has also earned 70 international caps for the Black Stars.

As Mensah heads into his ninth year in MLS, he is expected to attract interest from other clubs within the league, eager to tap into his wealth of experience.
