Kwesi Appiah has firmly dismissed speculation about a potential return as head coach of Ghana’s senior national team, the Black Stars. Currently focused on his role as the head coach of Sudan, Appiah has guided the Falcons of Jediane to a successful qualification for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON), a tournament Ghana failed to qualify for.
The Black Stars’ disappointing qualification campaign has put current head coach Otto Addo under intense scrutiny, with calls for his resignation growing louder. However, when asked if he would consider a third stint leading the Black Stars, Appiah was clear in his response.
“If you are a professional coach, you will have to always keep in mind that you must be ready for any opportunity, but as of now, I have a contract with Sudan,” Appiah told Asempa FM. “For now, I am focused on what I am doing with Sudan. I don’t want to say anything that contradicts my current position.”
Appiah, who was Ghana’s head coach from 2012 to 2014 and later from 2017 to 2020, remains a celebrated figure in Ghanaian football. He is particularly remembered for leading the Black Stars to qualify for the 2014 FIFA World Cup in Brazil.
This year, Appiah’s Sudan side held Ghana to a goalless draw in Accra before defeating them 2-0 in Benghazi during the AFCON qualifiers, a feat that further cements his reputation as a skilled tactician.
For now, Appiah remains committed to his Sudanese project, leaving Ghana’s coaching conundrum unresolved.
