SC Freiburg coach urges patience as Ghanaian midfielder battles back from injury
Daniel-Kofi Kyereh’s dream of returning to competitive football remains on hold, nearly two years after the Ghanaian midfielder suffered a devastating cruciate ligament tear. SC Freiburg coach Julian Schuster confirmed that the 28-year-old’s recovery is progressing slowly, with no definitive timeline for his comeback.
“Kofi still has a way to go,” Schuster shared during a pre-match press conference ahead of Freiburg’s clash with Hoffenheim. “When you’re out for so long, the focus is on rebuilding general fitness. Recovery is a process that varies, and his case is no different.”
Kyereh’s journey at Freiburg began with immense promise. Joining the club on June 27, 2022, he wasted no time making his mark, scoring his first Bundesliga goal in a clash against Mainz on October 1, 2022. Just days later, he struck again, this time in a Europa League victory over FC Nantes. However, his momentum was tragically cut short by the long-term injury.
While some hopeful signs emerged earlier in his rehabilitation, the severity and duration of his absence have made it challenging to set a clear return date. Schuster emphasized the need for patience: “Due to the length of the injury, it’s difficult to name a time frame. We’re taking it step by step.”
As Kyereh continues his arduous recovery, both Freiburg fans and Ghanaian supporters remain eager to see him back on the pitch, showcasing the talent that once lit up the Bundesliga and Europa League.
