Italian striker Mario Balotelli, who also has Ghanaian roots, is reportedly on the verge of terminating his contract with Genoa due to a lack of game time. The 34-year-old forward has featured for just 56 minutes across six substitute appearances since joining the Serie A club as a free agent in October 2024.
Balotelli’s frustrations are compounded by the return of Caleb Ekuban and Jeff Ekhator from injury, which could further limit his opportunities on the pitch. With Andrea Pinamonti firmly established as Genoa’s main striker, Balotelli faces an uphill battle to secure a meaningful role in the squad.
Sources indicate that Balotelli is seriously considering activating a clause in his contract that allows for early termination. The Italian is rumored to have drawn interest from Mexican giants Cruz Azul, who are reportedly prepared to offer him a lucrative deal worth €2 million per season.
The former Manchester City star is said to be weighing his options carefully, reluctant to accept a peripheral role at Genoa until next summer. If he moves to Cruz Azul, it could mark a fresh chapter for Balotelli in Liga MX, where he would likely play a more prominent role.
