Former Ghana Football Association (GFA) president, Kwesi Nyantakyi, has issued a rallying call to Black Stars coach, Otto Addo, urging him to select only dedicated and committed players for Ghana’s upcoming 2026 FIFA World Cup qualifiers.
Speaking on Lawson FM, Nyantakyi expressed concern over the team’s recent struggles, particularly their shocking failure to qualify for the 2025 Africa Cup of Nations (AFCON) for the first time in 20 years. The Black Stars, four-time AFCON champions, finished bottom of their group, marking a historic low point in Ghanaian football.
However, the former CAF 1st vice president believes Ghana can bounce back if the right decisions are made ahead of their crucial qualifiers against Chad and Madagascar in March 2025.
“I don’t think all is lost, but we have to fix it,” Nyantakyi said. “We need to focus on inviting players who are ready and truly dedicated to representing the country. This shouldn’t be a routine call-up; it’s about assembling a team that values the shirt and is willing to fight for it.”
Nyantakyi’s comments come amidst uncertainty surrounding Otto Addo’s future as head coach. The 47-year-old is reportedly in discussions with the GFA Executive Council following the team’s disappointing AFCON campaign.
Currently sitting second in Group I with nine points, Ghana’s qualification campaign hangs in the balance. The upcoming games against Chad and Madagascar will determine whether the Black Stars can redeem themselves on the world stage.
